Luminaire design

Luminaire design embodies the experience of podpod design both as creative artists and as designers of illumination concepts. In form-finding as in any other category of our work, “thinking in terms of light” is at the origin of the design process.

Our product designs are fed by the experience of podpod design both as creative artists and as designers of illumination concepts. All designs take their root, not in mere formal approaches, but in the creators’ profound understanding of light. Thus our luminaires result in a logical whole composed of functionality defined by technical requirements and a clearcut, aesthetic and spare formal language. Designs take account of light quality and direction as well as of production suitability and maintenance friendliness.

An important field of our activity concerns concepts for the smart retrofitting of historic luminaires for inside and outside spaces, which are thus brought up to date with regard to lighting technology while preserving their period look to blend in with the historic environment. The example of the chandeliers for Liechtenstein Palace shows how podpod design’s modern LED candles recreate the appeal of slender wax candles. However, the use of additional modern luminaires is often necessary; frequently, these are specially adapted series-produced items. Their design is as a rule agreed in close consultation with the Federal Monuments Office.

With regard to street lighting, a key point lies in taking account of different effects during daytime and night-time, since the luminaires used should not only function during the night hours but are also highly visible in the day as urban furniture. The attractive cable suspension lamp UrbanSky, whose polarity poised between round and square is based on simple Boolean operations, was specially developed for cutting-edge LED technology by Philips. Form and technology thus blend in fully compatible unity; at the same time, the luminaire is imbued with its own, individual appeal.
